What is NFPA 1977?
The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) is responsible for 300 codes and standards that are designed to minimize the risk and effects of fire. NFPA 1977 is a standard that covers protective clothing and equipment used by firefighters during wildland firefighting operations.
When was it created?
The Technical Committee on Fire Service Protective Clothing and Equipment began work on this standard in April 1989 in response to requests from wildland firefighters to establish a standard covering the protective clothing and equipment used during wildland firefighting operations. The standard was first issued in 1993 and was then revised in 1998 and 2005. The 2005 revision is the most current edition and addresses load carrying equipment (a.k.a. web gear and backpacks) for the first time.
Why is it important?
The NFPA standards take the guess work out of purchasing quality fire equipment. How do they do it? The standards require manufacturers to make products which meet minimum levels of performance for your specific job criteria.
In addition, they require independent verification that the products consistently meet these requirements. For example, Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) tests our products in their labs and inspects our manufacturing facilities regularly to ensure compliance.
All manufacturers producing NFPA certified products are also ISO 9001 certified. ISO 9001 requires companies to implement formal quality programs that ensure product quality and continual improvement. ISO 9001 manufacturers are audited annually to ensure that they are not only maintaining their quality program, but actually improving it.
All of this independent testing and verification provides you with the peace-of-mind that the products you purchase consistently meet the performance standards set by the NFPA.
How do I know if my equipment is NFPA 1977 Certified?
The easiest thing to do is look at the product labels. The NFPA 1977 Standard has very specific product labeling requirements.
NFPA 1977 certified web gear must have a label that states:
THIS WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING LOAD CARRYING EQUIPMENT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 1977, STANDARD ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT FOR WILDLAND FIRE FIGHTING, 2005 EDITION.

In addition, the product label must include the independent certification organization’s label, symbol, or identifying mark. For example,

If the products don’t have these labels and/or the manufacturer can’t show you a Certificate of Compliance, the products are not NFPA 1977 Certified.
