Director of Compliance, Product Development & Quality Assurance

Being with True North Gear for nearly two decades, I often forget how I got here, but the truth is, I don't see my path as a career change so much as a change in medium. I studied Computer Science and started out debugging software, which trains you to think in terms of systems, root causes, and failure prevention. Rather than treating problems as isolated, you learn to analyze how components interact, identify edge cases, and verify solutions through structured testing. When I moved into manufacturing, first through years in my family's sewing factory, then here at True North Gear, I found that same mindset applied directly to gear and clothing development. Every material, seam, fastener, and design choice is part of a larger system that has to perform reliably under real-world conditions.

Instead of debugging code, I'm evaluating products for durability, functionality, safety, and regulatory compliance. On the cutting room floor and in costing exercises, I learned patterns and efficiencies in spreading fabric and ran time studies on sewing machines. Working directly with government contractors and their auditors taught me exactly what they look for in quality and construction. In both software and gear, the goal is the same: anticipate failures before users experience them, validate performance through rigorous testing, and continuously improve based on measurable evidence rather than assumptions.

That systematic approach is what I brought into building the compliance, product development, and quality assurance systems we use today at True North Gear. They haven't stayed static, they keep improving as the teams I work with grow with more subject matter experts, the same way good software keeps improving through testing and feedback. Compliance, product development, and quality assurance aren't separate checkpoints to me; they're one continuous discipline, the through-line that connects a bolt of fabric to a piece of gear someone trusts with their life.

In my off time, it’s all about the family and applying those same problem-solving methods to my family, except this client is much harder and provides endless unsolicited feedback and reviews all year round. It's honestly why I love going into the office.
