Pro Dry Tech Month
Our mission is to promote awareness for linemen around preventing heat stress before it leads to larger complications like heat illness and stroke. In support of PDT Month, like-minded brands DragonWear, Vimocity, Working Athlete, and trainer Ken Lulow have formed a collaborative effort aimed at promoting conversation and highlighting supportive measures for utility workers across PPE, hydration, movement, and mental preparedness.
While heat stress is a perennial topic, factors have grown more complicated over the years. Today, conditions are hotter, the demands are harder, and the work is more technical.
In the last several decades, average temperatures in the United States have risen by approximately 2.6°F, with some regions experiencing even more dramatic increases such as Alaska (+4.3°F), and Delaware and New Jersey (+3.7°F). Rising temperatures contributes to more frequent and intense heat, posing serious risks for workers by increasing the likelihood of heat stress and related symptoms.
If that’s not enough to deal with, line work is becoming increasingly technical with advancements in grid technology and renewable energy integration, as well as the need for more complex transmission work. With more than ever to focus on, linemen have to pay attention to fundamentals and practice protective measures on the job; what seems like the basics can sneak in and cause harmful, even potentially fatal issues.

Ken champions a full-circle approach to heat safety—one that includes the right gear, hydration, movement, and mental preparedness. His voice is a powerful reminder that safety isn’t just policy—it’s personal, and it starts with the daily choices linemen make to protect themselves and each other.
Best Practices for Staying Safe in the Heat
Working in extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. These essential tips and educational insights are designed to help linemen stay protected, prepared, and performing at their best. From hydration and movement to PPE and mental readiness, explore the daily practices that make a life-saving difference on the job.
Demanding Work in the Heat is a High-Stakes Game—Play it Smart
Heat doesn’t just wear down your body—it slows your brain. In high temperatures, cognitive function declines, reaction times lag, and decision-making suffers. That’s a dangerous combination when you’re working with high voltage, heavy equipment, or at height.
Long-term exposure to heat stress can also lead to serious health consequences, including kidney damage, cardiovascular strain, and neurological issues. “Toughing it out” isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a risk with far-reaching consequences. This campaign urges crews to recognize the signs, speak up, and advocate for smarter policies, better gear, and hydration protocols that support long-term health and safety.
Stretch. Hydrate. Suit Up. Every Damn Day.
Your daily prep isn’t just a checklist—it’s your life-saving tool belt. Creating a simple three-step ritual—stretch, hydrate, suit up—can dramatically reduce the risk of heat stress and injury on the job. Dynamic stretching prepares your body for the physical demands ahead, hydration keeps your internal systems functioning under pressure, and the right PPE protects you from both heat and UV exposure.
This isn’t about going through the motions. It’s about building habits that protect your health and performance. Featuring testimonials from linemen who’ve seen the difference firsthand, this campaign encourages crews to treat heat safety like any other critical protocol. Because when the heat hits hard, the basics are what save lives.
Skin Cancer Doesn’t Care About Toughness
Outdoor workers face a significantly higher risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma types. UV exposure builds up over time—even on cloudy days—and the damage isn’t always visible until it’s too late.
That’s why UPF-rated clothing matters more than sunscreen alone. Daily UV protection through technical fabrics is a critical layer of defense. This campaign educates linemen on the signs of precancerous skin damage, the importance of full-coverage gear, and how small daily choices can prevent serious illness down the road. Because sun safety isn’t about vanity—it’s about survival.
Your PPE is More Than a Requirement—It’s a Life-Saving Tool
PPE isn’t just about compliance—it’s about survival. In high-heat environments, the right apparel can mean the difference between staying safe and suffering from heat exhaustion or worse.
Arc-rated, breathable, and moisture-wicking gear helps regulate body temperature and prevent overheating. Unlike basic safety gear, Pro Dry Tech apparel is designed with the science of evaporative cooling in mind. Staying dry isn’t just about comfort—it’s about keeping your core temperature in check. This campaign educates workers on how to choose gear that works with their body, not against it, and why investing in the right PPE is investing in your life.
Heat Creep: How Heat Stress Builds Up Over Days—Not Just Hours
Heat stress doesn’t reset overnight. Back-to-back hot days can cause a dangerous accumulation of internal heat, even if you feel “fine” at the start of your shift. This phenomenon—known as heat creep—can lead to sudden fatigue, confusion, or collapse without warning.
That’s why it’s critical to combine intentional movement, hydration, and breathable PPE every single day. This campaign highlights how proactive habits can prevent heat from silently building up in your system. Because when sweat stops, danger starts—and by then, it might be too late to recover.
Hydrated or Hospitalized: The Thin Line in Summer Conditions
In the summer heat, the line between staying safe and ending up in the ER is razor-thin. Dehydration doesn’t just cause discomfort—it impairs your body’s ability to regulate temperature, leading to cramps, confusion, and even heat stroke.
Water alone isn’t enough. Electrolyte loss through sweat must be replenished to maintain balance and performance. This campaign explains why cramping is a red flag, how to recognize early symptoms of heat illness, and why pushing through isn’t “lineman tough”—it’s dangerous. Hydration is your first defense, and it needs to be strategic, consistent, and complete.
